Douglas College Athletics is committed to supporting the development of the whole student. Your academic success is critical to building a solid foundation for your future.
Student Success 1100 for athletes is a full-credit college development course. It teaches academic and life skills, such as time management, goal setting and term-paper writing, that will help you learn to successfully balance your studies and athletics. This course is taught by a former student athlete who understands the demands placed upon you as college athlete.
Our Academic Coach, Cavanagh Whitely, provides one-on-one support to student athletes, and can help guide you through all aspects of school life, including academics, counselling and financial aid.
We also have a study hall and tutors just for student athletes.
Academic Standards and Eligibility
As a student athlete you are required to be a full-time student to maintain athletic eligibility. In most cases, this means that you must complete a minimum of nine credits per major semester with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or higher. If you drop below nine credits in any semester you will instantly become ineligible. Any class add/drops must be approved by the Academic Coach.
If you drop below a 2.0 GPA in any given semester, the next semester you will be placed on athletic probation, which is supervised by the Academic Coach. If you remain under a 2.00 GPA in the next semester you will be academically ineligible to compete.
All Douglas College administered awards require recipients to have a minimum 2.00 GPA.
Strength and Conditioning Coach
Our Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, Jake Elder (BSc, CSCS), works with Royals teams and athletes to help achieve top physical conditioning. He provides a structured training approach throughout the season and addresses the individual needs of athletes. With this training, you are less susceptible to injury and can play at your full potential. You won't find this service at many other colleges.
Our Certified Athletic Therapist, Alvin Tseng (BSc [ExSc AT], CAT[C], CSCS) provides individual care to our student athletes through assessment, prevention, emergency care and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries. He works on campus and travels with our Royals teams. Should you get injured, our therapist is part of the optimal care we provide for healing and a safe return to activities.
As a Royals athlete, you will receive priority appointments at Columbia Integrated Health and fees will be billed directly against your extended healthcare plan. Please speak with your coach and/or athletic department assistant prior to visiting Columbia as there are limits onthe amount of services you can receive. If you go over these amounts you will be required to pay for services out-of-pocket.
