Women’s Softball head into NWAC championship as #2 seed

By Quinn Allen

The Douglas College Women’s softball team will begin their quest to an NWAC title as they begin the tournament on Friday morning in Spokane taking on #15 seed Big Bend Community College.

The Royals had an outstanding season, posting a 35 and 5 record overall and head into the NWAC tournament on an eight-game winning streak. Douglas has really swung the bats well this season with a team average of .375, fourth best in the entire northwest. On the mound the lady Royals have been very consistent as well with a team ERA of 2.52, second best in the entire NWAC.

In order for the Royals to return back to the NWAC finals, they will have to win four games straight. They could meet up with Conference rivals Everett and Edmonds in the early stages of the tournament. Douglas has been in the NWAC final in the last two years in a row, losing to Wenatchee Valley last year and Mt. Hood in 2016. Being the only Canadian team, it’s quite impressive they have advanced to the final for two straight years. The Royals have numerous sophomores who would love to end their Douglas careers with a NWAC championship title under their belt. They have played very well this season and it will be exciting to see if they can advance to their third consecutive final.

The entire tournament will take place at Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane, Washington. First pitch for the Royals on Friday will be at 10am. If they win against Big Bend, they will play the winner of Southwest Oregon and Everett at 3pm on Friday afternoon.

The final will take place on Monday, May 21st at 11am.
