Douglas College Inducted into the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame
The Douglas College Royals badminton program has been inducted into the Coquitlam Sports Hall of Fame (CSHOF), a prestigious honour recognizing athletes, coaches, builders, and teams from the City of Coquitlam for their outstanding contributions and achievements in sport.
The 2007, 2008, and 2009 Royals badminton teams were welcomed into the Class of 2026 alongside Head Coach Arif Mawani and 15 Douglas College alumni, including CCAA Hall of Fame inductee (Class of 2025) RuiLin Huang. The induction ceremony took place on June 10, 2026, at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex.
Under Coach Mawani's leadership, the Royals built one of the most successful programs in Canadian collegiate history, capturing more than 40 provincial championships and over 20 CCAA national championships. Based at the Coquitlam Campus, the program also played a key role in hosting numerous PACWEST (formerly BCCAA) and CCAA championships over more than two decades.
Between 2007 and 2009, the Royals established a dominant national presence. In 2007, while hosting the CCAA National Championships, Douglas swept all five events: Women's Singles, Men's Singles, Women's Doubles, Men's Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. The team followed with back-to-back national team titles in 2008 and 2009, capturing gold in events including Women's Doubles, Men's Doubles, Mixed Doubles (2008), and Women's Singles, Women's Doubles, and Men's Doubles (2009).
The program's legacy was further recognized in 2024 with the CCAA 50th Anniversary Badminton Supremacy Award, honouring Douglas College as the top badminton program across the association's first 50 years.
This Hall of Fame induction celebrates a legacy of excellence, leadership, and lasting impact on collegiate sport in Coquitlam, British Columbia, and across Canada.
