Matt leads basketball Royals in PACWEST restart
Mike McKay has been named the Men’s Basketball Head Coach for the Douglas College Royals. McKay assumes the position after the departure of Head Coach, David Petroziello during the 2020-21 season.
Matt McKay has been named the Men's Basketball Head Coach for the Douglas College Royals. McKay assumes the position, ready to lead the Royals in defense of their 2019-20 PACWEST Conference Championship.
Coach McKay, a Simon Fraser University (SFU) graduate, has a Master of Education from the University of Missouri with an emphasis in Positive Coaching and Athletics Administration. His core values of accountability, effort, respect and empathy are grounded in a leadership philosophy "to create a culture that believes in and strives for excellence in everything we do and develop belief in each other and ourselves."
Coupled with his wealth of experience coaching at both the NCAA and CCAA levels at SFU and Kwantlen University, Coach McKay was most recently Basketball Canada's Centre for Performance/ BC Basketball, Head Coach. He has a long-standing history with Douglas College in various capacities and is familiar with the Royals culture.
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with our department and student athletes to continue to build on the tradition of success that has been established a Douglas College. I'm excited about leading the men's basketball team in our return to sport this year, and can't wait to get to work on court with the players." Said McKay
The Royals will start with a relatively new slate, having only one returning player from the 2019-20 PACWEST Conference Championship team.
