The 5th seeded Douglas Royals men's basketball team came into the PACWEST Championships last weekend seeking a positive playoff experience. Unfortunately, their season was cut abruptly after a quarter-final loss against the 4th seeded Langara Falcons (who later went on to become bronze medalists). Despite the defeat, this young Royals team showcased that the future is in fact bright for them.
The team finished the game with a 35% field goal percentage that saw significant contributions from multiple players. Veteran #6 Ben Rabel put up an impressive 21 points on the night and amassed 15 rebounds against the Falcons, being a critical part of the Royals offense and ball control. After the match, Rabel was named the PACWEST Player of the Game.
Second Team All-Star and All-Rookie member #0 Corez Johnson sat right behind him obtaining 18 points on the night. Johnson has been an integral component of the Royals offense this season and delivered the same type of game at his first collegiate championships.
Rookie #14 Ehi Obetoh also played a good game, obtaining 11 points and 8 rebounds against Langara. That marks just one short of his season record in rebounds. The 6'7 forward has been a great under-the-net presence for the Douglas team.
Although this finish was not the one they wanted, the young talent within the Royals will be exciting to look out for and watch for years to come. This season only marks the beginning.
